Thrifty Thinking: Saving on Energy Bills

Winter is still going strong, especially in northern areas of the United States. If you haven't already thought about it, now is a good time to pay attention to ways that you can save on your energy bills - especially your home heating bills.

The first easy step is to make sure you are turning off appliances and lights when not in use. If you rarely use a coffee maker, it doesn't need to stay plugged in. Make sure you're using energy efficient appliances and light bulbs as well.

Reconsider your heating needs. You can use a programmable thermostat to lower the temperature during the day when people are away at work and at night when it's easy to put on an extra blanket. Or you can adjust it manually. Try nudging your normal setting down one degree and see if it bothers your family as well (or consider wearing house jackets or sweaters inside).

Make sure your water heater isn't set above 120. You'll still get hot showers, and you'll save energy and prevent scalding.

If you need help getting started, contact your local energy audit services for professionals that can help make sure you are getting every penny of savings you can. They can even help you find home improvement grants so that major changes to your house that would improve your energy bills don't cost you so much. One of the biggest things we did shortly after moving in was installing new energy efficient windows. This made a significant difference on our own heating bill from one winter to the next, and eliminated the need to use plastic to help insulate the windows.
